an outdoor newborn session :: minneapolis newborn photography ::

alternatively titled …

dear minnesota, can we please have summer back now?  xoxo, jen

yesterday … was like springtime, essentially.  warm-ish.  rainy.  grey.  foggy.  it was an illusion of spring … grass all around with only small mounds of snow.  weather warm enough to walk outside without layers of down.  puddle jumping in waterproof boots.

today?

snow.  cold.  get yourself under a quilt and watch movies all day sipping hot cocoa weather.

i’m not such a fan of cold and snow and yucky driving weather where the ice gets jammed under the windshield wiper … and when you turn the wipers on, a massive streak of icy-snowy-water blurs your vision and you have to sit with your neck at an odd angle so that you can see the road and cars until you can park somewhere and smack it against the windshield several times to remove the ice …

ugh.

i’m in the mood for beach and warm and sunsets of color, can you tell?

all of this to tell you … i pulled this newborn session out of hiding … because outdoor? newborn? session? in minnesota?  yes.please.

079lowresolution DONOTPRINT

i don’t get to do many outdoor newborn sessions … but when i do?  swoon.  LOVE.  more please.

enjoy.

and if you have a baby due in the warmish months?  OR if you want to travel with a newborn to a warmish place?  OR if you live somewhere warmish and you want me to come to you?

yes, please.  i’m SO there.

speaking of which …

enjoy more of sweet little cora …

{little miss charlotte} :: minneapolis baby photographer ::

missing this little girly and her mama today.

meet charlotte.

my bestie’s little one.  yes.  my best friend (and her husband) make beautiful babies, don’t they?  they live way too far away.  and i miss drinking coffee with her in the mornings.  and making lunches for the kids.  and talking for hours on end.  (which we still do.  via phones.  not.the.same.)

also?  cake.  yum.

this sweet mama shared this photo on her facebook page this morning … a year after her sweet boy, hudson, raced his way into the world … and i was reminded how much i absolutely adored her maternity session.

she is a creative photographer soul that had a vision that just happened to correspond with mine … and we managed to create some really beautiful images.

and her bathtub?  swoon.

everyone should have a tub like that.

seriously.

enjoy, friends.

and happy birthday sweet hudson.  you are incredibly loved.

:: birth week :: unexpected moments. unwavering love and support. molly’s birth story.

113lowresolution DONOTPRINT
friday friday friday …

or as we said in our house this morning … FRIED EGG FRIDAY!  or maybe that was just me … the kids looked at me weirdly and went back to building things with wooden blocks.

meh.

someone in this house must show some amount of excitement over the little things … spoiled babies.  when i was growing up … we only got fried eggs on sundays.

and it’s birth week!

which i’m totally continuing through the weekend … whew.  wish me luck.

{sigh}

this was a tough birth story for me to write about …

this mama and i met over the.most.amazing.lunch.ever.  and followed it up with THE.MOST.AMAZING.VANILLA.LATTE. in all of the land.  no joke.  (at angelina’s kitchen in woodbury) … i often struggle to find really yummy vegetarian meals at restaurants … and the choices were overwhelming … which yay!  totally made my day.

we had originally talked on the phone a bit prior … when she told me her entire birth history and stories and reasonings behind the VBAC that she was working towards.  her first birth had ended in a relatively traumatic c-section following a failure to progress.  her second baby girl was an automatic c-section due to where they were living at the time.  now … they were living in minnesota where she could try for a VBAC.  she really wanted to hire a birth photographer to capture a few images.  we discussed how that would work … and she thought she didn’t want any photos of the laboring process … just of the actual delivery wherein she got her VBAC.  after a long conversation, i helped her see that birth photography isn’t merely photos of a baby being born …

birth photography is a story.

it’s story telling at it’s finest … it shows compassion and support.  love and fear.  it tells a story of who was there on the moment you were born.  it tells the story of how hard your mama had to work to meet you.  it tells the story of you before you were in your mom and dad’s arms.  and it tells the story of how much love you had surrounding you.

it’s a story of the beauty on a day when things feel chaotic and out of control … a day when you don’t have the time or energy to see everything.  and it stops time and shows you how beautiful the day was

after meeting over lunch … i think she decided i wasn’t crazy … and decided that birth photography was definitely for them.

and then … their sweet little babe decided to make the rest of the pregnancy crazycakes.  this mom and dad worked SO HARD … they did spinning babies, they did acupuncture and chiropractic care.  we had a beautiful maternity session.

012callahanlowresolutionDONOTPRINT

they waited and waited and worked and worked … up until the very last second.

and beyond that, too …

at 42 weeks of pregnancy … she went in for another appointment and her blood pressure was a bit higher and things started spiraling out of control.  it was finally decided that a repeat c-section was the way to proceed.

and i felt incredibly heartbroken for them.

i arrived at the hospital and took photos of the little things … hand holding.  paper signing.  phone calls and tears of sadness mixed up with the joy of knowing they were about to meet their newest love.

dad took my camera into the delivery room and he and a nurse captured those first few moments of love.

(sidenote?  some hospitals will allow a photographer in the OR, some won’t … it’s best to discuss these possibilities with your providers and with your birth photographer to decide what will happen in your case if your birth plans are altered.)

and then we captured the momeasdfnts of love and nursing … i came back in the morning for a fresh 48 session and watched as their two little girls met their newest sister.

and it’s funny … because i drove to the hospital the night before with sadness.  because {sigh} things were not going as we had all hoped and wished for.  and i left the next day with so much happy … because … a baby is a baby.  a new life is a new life.  there is joy and tenderness and love in birth … and i adore being asked to capture that on camera.

and for their birth story … enjoy …

my heart melted when mom send me this message …

“I am really more thankful for the maternity/birth/fresh 48. truly.
I’m really not just being nice.
It is really difficult to explain…
but I didn’t really feel all that pretty when I was pregnant…just huge lol
and then I saw your pictures and felt so much better…I actually saw something beautiful
and of course the birth was one big emotional roller coaster
I am writing my birth story…and I look at the images and realize that everything that I wanted I had…but I was so upset about how the journey ended that it was difficult for me to see the new journey that was beginning
I started to get it once I was in the OR and the spinal was in…then I could focus on meeting Molly…but looking back at your images I really should have caught on to that sooner
I deeply longed for Rob and I to experience this birth thing together…his support and assurance through something tough…this natural childbirth thing
then I saw your pictures and realized that we did work through something tough together…and he was by my side the ENTIRE time supporting me…cheering me on…even though it wasn’t the natural birth we had envisioned
Jen…that is priceless…
that is a gift that nobody else could have given me…truly
I am now the biggest advocate of birth photography out there!!!”

LOVE that.  because she summed up what is so exactly true … not just the actual birth … BUT … that the path that your birth story takes is one of beauty.  yes.  the outcome is beautiful and cute and has amazing little toes … BUT … the path that leads you to that … is so awesome to capture and to hold in your hands afterwards.

i love that she sees the beauty in her birth now.

:: birth week :: peace strength and cake … aubryn’s birth story

thursday of :: birth week :: …
i’m realizing really quickly why i rarely blog …

and also why i should blog more.

i LOVE it … i love the interaction … i love spilling words through my fingers upon the keyboard.  i love looking at photos and creating stories.  i love telling stories.

but time.

whew.

time certainly slips quickly through my fingers … i feel like i’m constantly reaching for that last minute of the day … eager to get to it and flop my head down upon my pillow … whilst pushing it away … because i have just a few more things that need to happen before i get there.

i think we all feel that way … i hope we all feel that way … please tell me i’m not the only one.

today’s birth story …

141lowresolution DONOTPRINT

this beautiful mama and i had a chance to finally meet during her maternity session …

020lowresolution DONOTPRINT

she was so beautiful and kind … i felt so honored that she had chosen me to come into her birthspace and observe as she brought her daughter into the world.  on one condition … my cora was going to be turning seven on the 3rd of may.  so … she could have her any day … except that one.

on the third.  (of course.)  she definitely knew that baby was on her way.

i celebrated my girl.  and turning seven.

we ate dinner before heading to her birthday party … which i had oh.so.smartly. planned to have at a local bounce house place … just.in.case.

as we were finishing dinner … i got the … “you should probably think about coming sometime in the nearish future” call.

i hugged my girl tightly while she gave me the permission to go.  and i left.  even though it kinda broke my heart leaving her.  and my poor husband.  because gah.  20 kids in a jumping place?  whew.  (thank goodness for the employees of said jumping place.)

such calm and peace surrounded this mama as she moved through her birth … a true testament to hypnobabies (want to learn more? … there’s a giveaway at the end of the post!) … she had a wonderful support team that knew when she needed some aloneness … and tuned in enough that any minor change in voicing would send them all scurrying towards her.

and they frosted a cake.

:)

mama is a master at cakes … and asked that her team spend some of their time creating a birthday cake.  but here’s the thing.  NONE OF US ARE PROFESSIONAL CAKE DECORATORS.  i hid behind the camera while the doulas and midwives gracefully decorated her cake.  er.  kinda gracefully decorated her cake.  the frosting was delicious.:) there was truly no perfection involved … but that cake was embellished in LOVE.  (and giggles) plain and simple.

enjoy …

and because she’s so darn cute …

here’s aubryn at her newborn session …

:: birth week :: beauty and strength … baby a’s birth story

oh friends.

welcome back for the wednesday edition of birth week …

i’m seriously over the moon excited to share this story with you … this was one of my very first birth stories that i was given the honor of capturing … a first little baby … an oh-so-very loved little one …

15 lowresolution DONOTPRINT

i cannot even believe that she’s one.  already!  one!

and on her birthday … i received the loveliest note from her mama with a sweet little photo of their girl … a year later.

awe.

heart.melt.

and it’s funny … because i feel like i capture these birth stories and fall head over heels in love with each and every family … and they move into the craziness that is newborn-ness and i start falling head over heels in love with my next family …

and sometimes i have a family that wants me to capture so many more of their life’s milestones for them … and sometimes i don’t.  which is still ok … because  i realize that i was a person so lucky to be in that moment with them … a moment that can never be replaced or redone.  even if they hire me to photograph nineteen births!  it will never be that birth again.

and this mama gave me permission to share many of their images that i’ve never shared before, and i’m so excited to share them with you.

enjoy …

and now for the familiar sounding script that i absolutely copied and pasted from yesterday’s post (because we spent way.too.much.time. at the zoo today and then scrambled to get to swim team and eat dinner and go to bed.  GAH.  KIDS.)  to re-explain ::birth week:: to all of our new friends!

:: birth week :: golden light peace filled waterbirth at home

yay for day two of :: birth week ::!!  whoop whoop.

i promise to not compare birth week to shark week in this post.

but it’s seriously all my mind races to when i think the words birth & week together.  a bit ridiculous considering i’ve never even seen shark week (full disclosure:  we haven’t had television in YEARS.)

AVOIDING SHARK WEEK.

let’s talk birth instead, huh?

i love how this mama found me and we connected immediately … and then found out she was birthing at home and she is literally just down the street from me.  we had a gorgeous maternity session by a lake and i got to know her family … which was so awesome.  i love having maternity sessions with my mamas prior to their birth … they get used to me and my clicking and i get to know their personalities even more.  plus?  i love maternity sessions … they are my “photographer by regret” … i never had them while pregnant (unless you count the photo my husband took of me in striped pants feeling oh.so.done.) … and it’s the photos that my kiddos wish to see.  they love the idea of seeing themselves before they were … at a moment when they were inside me and i was eagerly anticipating every single second of their existence.

2014-07-28_001
2014-07-28_002

and on a late summer night, i received a call to come over … labor had definitely started … and i was the first to get there.  :) i LOVE living that close to a client!  i watched as they quietly labored into the night … surrounded by their home and attentive midwives.  i stood back and observed as a very strong mama pushed her baby into the world … excited to see her girl for the very first time.  she fell in love with her immediately … and daddy quickly was wrapped around her tiny little finger.

want to see the beauty of their daughter’s birth?  head onto their slideshow … enjoy, friends.

enjoy the video!

and just a few more things? i really wanted to feature a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) story today … because something important is occurring very near to us right now that is highly impacting many mamas that are looking to have a VBAC.

a local hospital that has been at the forefront of allowing women a chance to have a birth as they wished has decided to ban VBACs altogether.  their current reasoning is one surrounding the costs.  and although i understand that from a business perspective … it breaks my heart knowing that many women that have long dreamed of making their own choices surrounding their birth will now be unable to do so.  and in turn … many women that were planning a birth at that location are all of a sudden left in limbo.

what can you do?

you can sign the petition urging Hudson Hospital to stop banning VBACs HERE … it’s truly important.  for many many reasons.
